Developing our people

Surf Life Saving Queensland, we strive to help our members become the best they can be, both on and off the beach. Our goal is to develop skills that support their personal growth and community involvement. To achieve this, we offer a wide range of programs tailored to all levels and backgrounds.

We continuously develop and monitor these programs to ensure they meet the needs of our amazing Members.

SLSQ Youth Excellence Program (15-17)

The Youth Excellence Program (YEP) is conducted annually by SLSQ, and provides an opportunity for youth members to be exposed to the many different elements of Surf Life Saving. Youth Development is about providing our young people with positive experiences and opportunities, which enhance their strengths and capacities, as well as affirming them as contributors to our community and shapers of their own future.
It is designed to provide SLSQ youth members with knowledge, experience, and allow them to develop skills in a wide range of activities in an enjoyable and stimulating environment. The program is structured to develop confidence, teamwork, knowledge, and leadership in all participants. It also aims to introduce the participants to the more formal and responsible roles of Surf Life Saving such as patrol duties, responsibilities of positions, member conduct, and support structures.
The program will consist of activities that include:
  • Teamwork
  • Networking
  • Fun
  • Pathways (internal and external to the organization)
Who can apply?
Active Members aged 15-17 years who have been identified by their clubs as a future leader, or who have a keen interest in developing their leadership and life skills. All applicants should:
  • Hold a proficient Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion
  • Be financial Club Member currently in, or aspiring to, a leadership role

SLSQ Lifesaving Development Program (16-20)

The Lifesaving Development Program is an education program that allows members to gain a number of lifesaving awards in a short space of time. The awards that program participants will gain include First Aid, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques and IRB Crewperson OR Silver Medallion IRB driver. Participants will also be exposed to additional skills and development opportunities including pathways, teamwork, leadership and lifesaving operations.
The Lifesaving Development Program trains using the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) education model. ELT uses scenario-based training to give candidates the opportunity to experience realistic emergency scenes to practice their lifesaving skills.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Proficient Bronze Medallion members who are aged 16-20 years and are registered members of a Queensland Surf Life Saving Club are invited to apply.
It is MANDATORY that participants hold a current Bronze Medallion prior to completing this program. Participants wishing to complete the IRB Drivers qualification must also hold a current Queensland Marine Licence (this must be registered with your Club and showing in Surfguard). Members over the age of 18 must also hold a current Working with Children Blue Card.

SLSQ Advanced Lifesaving Development Program (18yrs +)

The Advanced Lifesaving Development Program is designed for more than just gaining an award. With the goal of creating future leaders in the operations space, participants will learn incident management and be expected to act as incident controllers and members within the response team. Participants will also be exposed to additional skills and development opportunities including pathways, teamwork, leadership, and lifesaving operations.

Courses to be included in the pilot will be the Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue course as well as unaccredited Phase 1 Search & Rescue (SAR) Training delivered by Queensland Police Service (QPS).

This Program trains using the Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) education model. ELT uses scenario-based training to give candidates the opportunity to experience realistic emergency scenes to practice their lifesaving skills. Please note, the program involves a variety of realistic emergency situations.

WHO CAN APPLY?

  • Registered members of a club aged 18 years and above.
  • Pre-requisites include:
  • Blue Card, CYRMS & CSA
  • Proficient Bronze Medallion, First Aid & ART
  • Minimum 2 years patrolling experience

SLSQ Leadership Excellence Program (18yrs +)

WHO CAN APPLY?
Active Senior Members aged 18years and above who have been identified as future leaders within surf life saving, and have an eagerness to develop themselves personally and professionally.
Applicants must also:
  • Hold a proficient Bronze Medallion
  • Be financial club members that are in, or aspire to, a leadership role
