Our Role in Disaster Management
Surf Life Saving Queensland plays a critical support role in Queensland’s disaster and emergency response system. While our core mission is to protect people on the beach, our highly trained volunteers, paid lifeguards, and aviation crews also provide vital support during natural disasters and large-scale emergencies.
As a recognised support agency, SLSQ contributes to disaster operations through:
- Coastal intelligence and hazard monitoring
- Flood response (rescue, evacuation and re-supply)
- UAV (drone) surveillance and imagery
- Winch-capable helicopter support
- Real-time situational reporting via the State Operations and Communications Centre (SOCC)
- Assisting with evacuations, logistics, and community safety messaging
We work closely with local councils, emergency services, and disaster management groups to ensure a coordinated and effective response—before, during and after an event.
Our disaster management efforts are guided by a robust state-wide plan that ensures consistency, readiness, and resilience across all levels of SLSQ.

The Surf Life Saving Queensland Disaster Management Plan (SLSQDMPLAN) outlines how SLSQ prepares for, responds to, and recovers from disaster and emergency events across Queensland.
This plan supports SLSQ’s role within the Queensland Disaster Management Arrangements and ensures our organisation is ready to assist during times of need, from natural disasters to large-scale emergency incidents.
The latest version reflects current operational capability, alignment with state-wide disaster planning, and our commitment to keeping Queensland communities safe.
Emergency Management Roadmap 2026-2030
SLSQ has continued to deliver on its core mission - to save lives, build better communities, and provide Queenslanders with safer public waters. Guided by the Surf Life Saving Queensland Strategic Plan 2024–2027, our work continues to be focused on strengthening governance, reducing operational complexity, and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation. We have invested in our people, particularly our youth, while enhancing communication and leadership pathways across our diverse membership base.
