Veterans in Surf Life Saving
You served. Now surf life saving needs you.

You know what it means to show up for others. To work as a team. To stay calm when everything around you is anything but. Those qualities don't retire when you do — and surf life saving is a place where they matter every single day.

Queensland's beaches are protected by thousands of volunteers who patrol our coastline, support their communities, and look out for one another. We're inviting Queensland veterans to be part of that.

A place that feels familiar

Transitioning out of the military can mean losing some of the things that made service meaningful — structure, belonging, a team that has your back, and a reason to get up and do something that counts.

Surf life saving offers all of that. It's not the same as service, but it carries many of the same values.

You'll find people who understand commitment. Who turn up regardless. Who know that looking after your mates is part of the job. And who genuinely enjoy what they do.

What can I do to help?

There's no single path. You might want to patrol the beach on weekends, train in surf sport, take on a leadership role in your club, mentor younger members, or simply be part of a community that keeps you connected. We'll help you find what fits.

Roles include patrol member, first aid officer, water safety, club official, training supervisor, peer support officer, and more.

What we offer veterans

Mateship you can count on Club life is built around teams. Whether you're patrolling the beach, training together, or just sharing a cold drink after a long shift, lifesaving clubs are communities where real friendships form.

Purpose and structure Patrol rosters, training programs, and clear roles give you something to be part of. If you've found the unstructured nature of civilian life hard to navigate, lifesaving can offer a rhythm that feels right.

Meaningful contribution Every patrol shift matters. When you're on the beach, you're protecting lives — sometimes literally. That sense of contribution is real, and it stays with you.

Support for your wellbeing We understand that mental health matters, especially during and after transition. SLSQ has peer support pathways, a culture of looking out for each other, and communities that genuinely care. You're not just joining a club — you're joining a network of people who have your back.

Skills that transfer directly First aid, emergency response, teamwork under pressure, communication, leadership — your military background is an asset here. Many veterans find that their skills are immediately valued and put to use.
