What Happens After You Enquire?

Thinking about becoming a Surf Life Saving Queensland volunteer is a big first step – and once you submit your enquiry, you might wonder what actually happens next.

Good news: the process is simple, supported, and designed to help you find the right role, the right club, and the right pathway for you.

Here’s what you can expect.

1. You’ll receive a welcome message

As soon as your enquiry comes through, you’ll get a confirmation email with the basics – thanking you for your interest, outlining the next steps, and giving you a sense of what’s ahead. It’s your first touchpoint with the SLSQ community.

2. We’ll connect you with the right club

Your postcode helps us match you to the nearest or most suitable surf lifesaving club.
Each club has its own culture, volunteer opportunities, training schedule, and needs — so being connected with the right one is key.

If you already have a club in mind, we’ll make sure they receive your details.

3. Someone from the club will reach out to you

A volunteer leader or club representative will get in touch to:
• introduce themselves,
• understand what you’re interested in,
• answer questions, and
• talk you through the opportunities available.

This is your chance to ask anything — training times, roles, requirements, how patrol groups work, or even what to expect on your first day.

4. You’ll learn about the roles available

Not everyone becomes a patrol lifesaver – and not everyone needs to.

Depending on your skills, interests, and confidence, your club might suggest roles like:
• patrol
• first aid
• radio operations
• water safety
• administration
• youth support
• community events
• and more

There truly is a role for everybody in lifesaving.

5. You’ll be guided into the right training

Every role has a clear training pathway, and your club will let you know:
• which course you need
• when the next session is
• what to bring
• how long it takes
• and what support is available

Training is practical, hands-on, and always supported by experienced trainers and club members.

6. You’ll become part of a patrol or volunteer team

Once you’re trained, your club will help you join a patrol group or volunteer crew.
This is where you’ll meet new people, build skills, and become part of the lifesaving community.

For many people, this is where volunteering becomes something really meaningful – friendship, confidence, purpose, and community all come together.

7. You’ll make a real difference

Whether you’re on the beach, behind the scenes, or helping clubs deliver community programs, your contribution matters.

Volunteers are the heart of Surf Life Saving Queensland – and your journey is only just beginning.
