Frequently Asked Questions
Everything families need to know before the 2026/27 season.
How is my child's age group determined? ▼
Age groups in Nippers are determined by your child's age as at 30 September 2026 — the start of the 2026/27 season. For example, if your child turns 8 before or on 30 September 2026, they will compete and participate as a U8 for the full season.
When does the Nippers season run? ▼

South East Queensland: The 2026/27 Nippers season typically runs from October 2026 to March 2027, with most clubs holding sessions on weekend mornings.

North Queensland: Due to the tropical climate and stinger (jellyfish) season, North Queensland clubs generally operate on a modified calendar. Many clubs run their Nippers program from May through to September to avoid the peak wet season and stinger activity. Some clubs also run reduced programs during the October–April period depending on local conditions and stinger enclosure availability.

Exact dates and session times vary by club — always contact your local club for their specific schedule and any seasonal adjustments.

Does my child need to know how to swim? ▼
Yes — all Nippers must complete a Junior Preliminary Evaluation before participating in water-based activities. This assessment covers flotation, submersion, and propulsion skills, with specific requirements increasing for each age group. The evaluation must be conducted by a qualified swim coach (such as an AUSTSWIM-accredited teacher) and countersigned by an SLSQ Club Assessor. If your child needs to build their swimming ability before the season, we recommend enrolling them in swimming lessons as soon as possible. The calculator above shows the specific pool evaluation requirements for your child's age group.
What does it cost to join Nippers? ▼
Membership fees vary by club. Most clubs charge an annual Nippers fee that covers your child's participation, insurance, and club activities. Some families may be eligible for financial assistance through the Queensland Government's Play On program. Contact your local club for current fee information.
Do I need to volunteer as a parent? ▼
Nippers is run by a wonderful community of volunteers, and parental involvement is encouraged — and in many clubs, expected. This can range from assisting on the beach during sessions to taking on a formal role such as Age Manager or Water Safety. Your involvement makes Nippers safer and better for every child.
What if my child has a disability or additional needs? ▼
SLSQ is committed to inclusive participation for all children. Clubs work to accommodate a range of needs and learning styles. We encourage you to speak with your local club's Age Manager or Inclusion Officer before the season to discuss how they can best support your child.
What should my child wear to Nippers? ▼
Your child will need their club-issued Nippers cap (or rash vest), a swimsuit or rash vest, SPF 50+ sunscreen, and reef-safe footwear. Many clubs also require a club rashie or uniform — check with your club for their specific uniform requirements before the first session.
Are there carnivals and competitions? ▼
Yes! Most age groups from U8 upwards have the opportunity to participate in inter-club carnivals throughout the season. These events celebrate skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Carnival attendance is generally optional, though your club will let you know of events relevant to your child's age group.
What happens after U13? ▼
After completing U13, young members can progress into the Youth program and work towards their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) — the first step to becoming a qualified lifesaver. This is an exciting milestone that opens the door to beach patrol, leadership, and a lifelong involvement in surf lifesaving.
