The state’s most talented young surf stars will hit North Kirra Beach this weekend for the Queensland Youth Surf Life Saving Championships.
The largest and most prestigious surf sports event for under-11 to under-15 age categories, the Championships will see thousands descend on the Gold Coast.
Surf Life Saving Queensland adjusted the location for the prestigious event earlier in the week due to continuing poor conditions and forecasted swell and wind, moving all but the distance run events to North Kirra from Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park.
The Championships bring together athletes from across the state, who will compete in a range of individual and team events on the beach and in the water including 1km and 2km beach runs, beach flags, sprint, surf race and board events.
Team events will see the qualifying teams following regional branch championships from North Queensland and North Barrier through to the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast compete in the beach relay, surf teams, board relay and Cameron relay events.
Last year’s Champion Club, North Burleigh will be looking to go back-to-back whilst second place getters Maroochydore, who missed first place by just two points in 2023, will have their eyes set on that gold medal club position.
The action commences Thursday afternoon at Burleigh Beach with the 1km and 2km distance runs followed by water and beach events from Friday morning at North Kirra.
For those coming down to support all the talented youngsters in action over the weekend, make sure you check out the SLSQ fan festival zone with plenty of fun to be had from meet and greets with surf superstars, amazing offers from Race One and Engine, food trucks and more.
