Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) and national mental health organisation LIVIN have today announced a landmark partnership aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and improving wellbeing outcomes across Queensland’s lifesaving community. The partnership represents a powerful alignment between two iconic Australian organisations committed to protecting lives, both on the beach and in everyday life. Through education, advocacy, and real-world support, the collaboration will embed mental health awareness into the fabric of surf lifesaving.
SLSQ CEO Dave Whimpey said the partnership reflects the organisation’s deep commitment to supporting not just physical safety, but the mental health and wellbeing of its members and broader community.
“Our volunteers are trained to save lives on the beach, but this partnership ensures they’re also equipped to look after themselves and each other off the beach,” Mr Whimpey said. “LIVIN is a national leader in mental health awareness and education, and together we can deliver powerful training, tools and community engagement initiatives that make a lasting difference. We’re incredibly proud to be taking this step.”
The 12-month partnership will see the creation of co-branded training videos, digital campaigns, community activations, and dedicated mental health messaging across Queensland’s surf clubs. A key initiative includes the development of a mental health resources, as well as LIVIN’s presence at major SLSQ events including the Queensland Championships and member events.
Casey Lyons, CEO and Co-Founder of LIVIN, said the partnership was a natural fit given the shared values of service, resilience and community connection.
“Lifesavers are everyday heroes, but they’re also human. Mental health doesn’t discriminate, and it’s critical that we create environments where people feel safe to speak up and seek support,” Mr Lyons said. “Together with SLSQ, we’re building a culture where mental fitness is as important as physical fitness. This partnership will help us reach thousands of Queenslanders with a message that truly matters: it ain’t weak to speak.”
The partnership will also see the two organisations collaborate on merchandise, awareness campaigns, and joint media initiatives to elevate the conversation around mental health across Queensland’s beaches and beyond.
