The 35th North Australian Championships wrapped up after an incredible weekend of competition at both the Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex and Mackay Surf Life Saving Club. With perfect weather across the three days, athletes made the most of the ideal conditions to deliver some exceptional performances in the pool and on the beach.

The event once again showcased the amazing depth of talent across North Queensland’s surf lifesaving community — from young nippers right through to our seasoned masters.

A huge congratulations to Cairns SLSC, who reclaimed the overall club championship title after a few years away from the top spot! Tannum Sands SLSC followed closely in second place, with Elliott Heads SLSC rounding out the podium in third.

In addition to the club results, a special mention goes to both our Age Champions and athletes who were selected on the Queensland Country Representative Team — each showing incredible effort, dedication and spirit across the weekend.

The Championships also saw the continuation of one of the most inspiring additions to the program — our adaptive events. Five talented individuals took part in the wade, swim, flags and sprint events, demonstrating the inclusive spirit and strength of our lifesaving community. The initiative continues to grow, providing more opportunities for all abilities to take part in surf sports and experience the excitement that come with competing at North Aussies.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible dedication of our officials, IRB crews and water safety personnel, who volunteered their time and expertise to ensure the carnival ran smoothly and safely. Your efforts never go unnoticed and are truly appreciated by everyone involved.

A massive thank you to Mackay SLSC for once again hosting a fantastic event and welcoming competitors, families and supporters from across the region.

We’d also like to acknowledge the Mackay Regional Council for their ongoing support of the North Australian Championships and surf lifesaving in the region. Their involvement plays a key role in helping bring this years event to life.
