Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) can confirm that the 2025 Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships scheduled to be held at North Kirra from 7-9 March, will be cancelled due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred and unstable weather conditions forecast for south-east Queensland.
Based on modelling and advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and Queensland Government Emergency Services, SLSQ has made the decision to cancel the event in the interest of competitors’ and officials’ welfare.
Safety of competitors and officials is first and foremost when making the decision to cancel the competition, including the safety of travel to and from the competition. Carnival officials have been monitoring the conditions in accordance with the risk management plans in place and have deemed conditions too unstable to be able to safely deliver the event.
SLSQ has made the decision today, to ensure all members have adequate time to make preparations around travel and accommodation.
With the Youth Championships scheduled for next weekend, there was no opportunity for SLSQ to consider postponing the event.
Surf Life Saving Queensland will continue to monitor conditions over the coming days and the impacts from Tropical Cyclone Alfred which may affect the conduct of Queensland Youth Championships, due to be held from 13-16 March at Tugun beach. Updates on that event will be made early next week.
