Dear Members and Clubs,

Over recent weeks we have seen a spate of tragic drownings on Queensland waters.

Each one is a stark reminder of why we exist – and why our message has to be louder than ever:

If you’re getting in the water, always swim between the red and yellow flags.

As lifesavers, we see it all the time – people swimming in rips just metres from a patrolled area. We know that most drownings occur outside flagged or patrolled locations. We also know that when people choose to swim between the flags, their chances of getting home safely increase dramatically.

We can’t do this alone from the patrol tent.

We are asking every SLSQ member, club and supporter to help us push a single, consistent message across Queensland:

Swim between the flags so lifesavers can see you and help you if something goes wrong.

Attached you’ll find a set of social media tiles, suggested captions and short video prompts that you can use immediately on your own channels and in your local community.

How you can help – today

For Clubs:

• Share the tiles and video on your official social media over the coming weeks.
• Ask your Patrol Captains and Club Captains (or anyone who is comfortable in front of a camera) to record a short 30–45 second video explaining why swimming between the flags matters at your beach.
• Include the message in your newsletters, website banners and clubhouse signage.
• Work with your Supporters Clubs to share through their physical location, networks and social media.

For Members:

• Post one of the tiles or videos on your personal social media and add a short message in your own words.
• Talk to friends, family, workmates and school communities about always choosing a patrolled beach and swimming between the flags.
• If you’re on patrol, take a moment to explain the “why” behind the flags to beachgoers you interact with.

Tone and approach

This is not about blame. It’s about care.

Our message is simple:

• We want every person who visits our beaches, rivers and waterways to go home safely.
• The red and yellow flags are there for a reason.
• One small decision – where you choose to swim – can change everything.
