Coolum Beach SLSC
Coolum Beach SLSC was established in 1919 and celebrated its centenary in 2019. It is one of the Sunshine Coast’s longest-running surf clubs.
The club currently has more than 240 patrolling members, over 200 keen Nippers, as well as a surf sports team of around 100.
Many members participate in competition throughout the year to maintain their fitness and life saving skills. The club competes successfully from local to national levels in various categories of surf sports ranging from beach, water and rescue events through to surfboats and IRBs.
In 2010, Coolum SLSC adopted its motto “The Heart of Coolum Since 1919… Your Club For Life” soon after opening its remodelled clubhouse with $2 million worth of improvements, including the best training facilities available.
Volunteer Lifesavers patrol Coolum Beach on weekends and public holidays from September to April.
Coolum Beach
Coolum offers a long beach with plenty of surf and a range of settlements and facilities.
Coolum Beach occupies the southern 2km of the beach, with small Stumer Creek and a few rocks in the surf defining the northern end of this part of the beach. The main Caloundra-Noosa Road passes just behind the beach, which is backed by a large reserve containing a caravan park, as well as the surf life saving club at the southern end, close by the rocks of Point Perry. All facilities are available in the adjoining shopping area.
Wave height decreases slightly toward the point, however rips still dominate the surf. Swimming anywhere along the beach is relatively hazardous owing to the persistent strong rips, the deep longshore trough and larger rips further offshore. Swimmers should only swim at the four patrolled beaches and always stay between the flags, well clear of the rips.
