Surfers Paradise Main Beach

Surfers Paradise Main Beach is Queensland’s best-known beach, situated at the heart of the Gold Coast tourist trade. It is a mecca for hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the world.

This 2km section of beach is backed by a fenced foredune, with numerous access tracks from The Esplanade – the most highly developed section of the Australian coast. The surf club and three lifeguard towers watch over this rip-dominated beach.

Rips are present whenever waves are breaking and deep rip channels may run out from the shoreline. Swim only in patrolled areas and avoid the rip holes and outer trough. Stay close inshore and on the attached portion of the bar.

This is undoubtedly Australia’s most heavily developed and utilised stretch of beach, with 16km of beautiful sand and surf, but the water can be is hazardous, so be careful as to when and where you swim.

The Surfers Paradise SLSC was first established in 1925 to attract tourists to the area by providing a safe beach for swimmers. To say that the club succeeded is somewhat of an understatement.

While providing an outstanding model of surf life saving on the busiest and best-known beach in Queensland, the courage of Surfers Paradise SLSC’s members is well known. In 1958 acts of heroism and self-sacrifice were displayed when members of the club were catapulted into the limelight when they heroically participated in a shark attack rescue.

This resulted in the club receiving the Meritorious Award for Bravery from Surf Life Saving Australia and six members receiving Royal Humane Society awards.

Being proficient and having completed the prerequisite number of patrol hours allows club members to compete at all facets of the club’s competition calendar, which remains strong from Nippers through to Masters.
