Point Danger

Coolangatta Beach

This is a heavily developed and somewhat modified beach since the construction of the groyne.

The Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club is located at the western end of the beach, 100m east of the groyne. The club is situated in a foreshore reserve that runs the length of the beach. The club is backed by Marine Parade, high rise apartments and the Coolangatta shopping area.

This is a moderately safe beach owing to the usually low waves. However, even under low wave conditions, deep rip channels and troughs occur along the beach and are intensified when waves exceed 1m. The safest swimming is in the two patrolled areas and clear of the Greenmount groyne.

The beach is continually changing as sand waves move through and past the beach, making it an interesting beach to observe. It has all the usual tourist facilities in backing Coolangatta plus the added safety of usually low waves and two surf lifesaving clubs and lifeguard towers.

Located on one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia and established in the 1958/1959 season, the club continues to serve the community and keep Coolangatta Beach safe for swimmers.

Coolangatta Surf Life Saving Club is a community organisation run by volunteers who are dedicated to protecting members of the public who surf and swim at the beach. Surf patrols are conducted on weekends and public holidays during the surfing season from September to April each year.

While the club is committed to beach safety, there is more to the club than just surf life saving. The club has hundreds of members who take part in a wide range of activities, such as beach patrols, fundraising, surf sports and more.

The club has formal and informal social activities throughout the year, including supporters club raffles, luncheons, golf days, barefoot bowls & much more. The Supporter’s Club also offers all-day dining on the Gold Coast’s biggest absolute beachfront balcony.
