Alexandra Headland Beach

A well-established, popular beach offering all facilities for tourists and the added safety of two surf lifesaving clubs.

Alexandra Head Beach is a 500m long high tide strip of sand fronted by continuous, 50m wide low tide rock flats. This beach is backed by a beachfront caravan park and a grassy bluff, with the main road on top of the 10m- 30m bluff.

While waves are usually 1m or less, care still needs to be taken on these beaches owing to the common presence of rips and the rocks on the headland beach. The northern end of Maroochydore Beach also contains deep tidal channels and shifting bars and is particularly hazardous. Likewise, there is a strong permanent rip against the rocks at the southern end of Alexandra Headland Beach.

Founded in 1924 and known by locals simply as “Alex”, the Alexandra Headland SLSC is one of the strongest clubs in the life saving movement.

The origins of the club can be traced back to group of young Woombye men in Mooloolaba SLSC, who were asked to assist in forming a surf club at Alexandra Headland. The club has a proud and successful history in both lifesaving and competition, with our members among the best in the country. Membership includes 11,000 members, including 500 Nippers and 320 active patrolling members.

Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club is responsible for patrolling the beach between Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. Our patrol season and competition season commences with the September / October school holidays, and concludes the first weekend in May. We train our members to become valuable life savers who patrol our beach, teaching techniques from surf swimming through to vital life saving and resuscitation skills. During patrol season, Nippers activities are conducted at the beach each Sunday morning from 7.45am.
