There’s a Role for Everyone in Surf Life Saving Queensland

When people think of surf lifesaving, they often picture lifeguards running into the surf. But the truth is, it takes a whole community to keep Queensland’s beaches safe. And that means there’s a place for everyone—no matter your skills, experience, or age.

Whether you’re looking to give back, learn something new, or meet like-minded people, Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) has a volunteer role that suits you.

Volunteer Opportunities Go Far Beyond the Beach

Yes, we need patrolling lifesavers. But we also need organisers, educators, fundraisers, tech-savvy thinkers, and community connectors.

If you’ve ever searched “volunteer roles near me” or “how to get involved in surf life saving without being on patrol,” you’re in the right place.

Here are just some of the volunteer roles available across Queensland’s surf clubs:

  1. Patrolling Lifesaver
Be trained to patrol beaches, respond to emergencies, and keep beachgoers safe. You’ll learn rescue techniques, first aid, and become part of a highly respected team.
  2. First Aid & CPR Support
Help save lives by providing first aid at carnivals, community events, or during patrols. Ideal for those with a medical interest or looking to build practical skills.
  3. Radio Operator / Communications Support
Coordinate patrols, respond to incidents, and manage comms equipment. A critical behind-the-scenes role that ensures everything runs smoothly.
  4. IRB Crew / Jet Ski Support
For the action-ready. Train as part of an inflatable rescue boat (IRB) team or support jet ski rescue operations during emergencies.
  5. Youth Mentor or Nipper Age Manager
Support the next generation of lifesavers. Work with young members to build their skills, confidence, and community connection.
  6. Club Administration & Operations
Help manage the day-to-day running of your local surf club—everything from rostering and records to finance and communications.
  7. Event and Fundraising Volunteer
Assist in organising community events, competitions, or BBQs. These roles help fund lifesaving gear and bring your club together.
  8. Training & Education Volunteer
Become a trainer or assessor to help new members earn their qualifications in lifesaving, CPR, or surf sports.
  9. Media, Marketing & Digital Support
Support your club’s social media, design flyers, update websites, or create videos that inspire your local community to get involved.
  10. Support Services (Welfare, Inclusion, Member Protection)
Ensure everyone feels safe, supported, and welcome in the club environment. These roles help foster a positive culture for all members.

Every Role Matters. Every Person Counts.

Whether you’re on the beach or behind the scenes, your time and energy directly contribute to saving lives and building stronger, safer communities.
