The representative & performance sport program in Queensland is collectively known as the "Queensland Cyclones". The program aims to cultivate the state’s most promising surf sport athletes through athlete development and representative opportunities across all surf sport disciplines including Ocean/ Beach competition, pool rescue, IRB racing and surf boat competition. The pinnacle representative opportunity at a state level is selection in a Queensland State Team. There are four Queensland State Teams selected annually who compete in Ocean/Beach, Surf Boat, IRB and Pool Rescue disciplines. These teams compete at the Australian Interstate Championships in respective disciplines throughout the year with results contributing towards the Alan Whelpton AO Shield – which is awarded to the state with the overall top pointscore across the four Interstate Championship Events. In addition to state team’s, other QLD representative opportunities include the Super Surf Teams League (SSTL) competition and QLD IRB Development Team.
Competes at the SLSA Ocean/Beach Interstate Championships each year (usually held in January). The teams is made up of 36 athletes selected across 3 divisions - Pathway (U14-U15), Youth (U17) and Open. Athletes compete in a variety of events across ocean (swim, board, ski, iron) and beach (sprint, flags) disciplines with individual performances within the each event contributing towards a team result. QLD has a long standing rivalry with NSW at the Ocean/Beach interstate competition. In 2024, QLD finished second overall.
Competes at the Interstate Championship section of the ASRL Open each year. The QLD Team is made up of crews from all divisions (Open Men’s, Open Women’s, Reserve Grade Men’s, Reserve Grade Women’s, U23 Men’s, U23 Women’s, U19 Men’s and U19 Women’s). The team is selected from performances at the ASRLQ State Team Trial held in January. The top crews are invited to participate in the trial, with performances during the season determining whether an granted an invitation to compete in the trial. At the 2024 event, QLD won overall for the second year in a row (from a countback to 5th!)
