Surf Life Saving Queensland Launches 2024/2025 Patrol Season with Historic ‘Raising of the Flags’ Ceremony Honouring Volunteer Lifesavers and First Nations Custodians

September 16, 2024

The 2024/2025 Surf Life Saving patrol season commenced over the weekend with volunteers from North Barrier to the Gold Coast raising the iconic red and yellow flags to mark the occasion.

This year, the inclusion of the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags represents a symbolic gesture, highlighting SLSQ’s commitment to First Nations acknowledgment, inclusion, and reconciliation. It also serves to recognise our shared histories and collective responsibility in caring for Queensland’s beaches and all who visit them.

The North Queensland region led the journey in March, at the start of their season, when they became the first to raise the red and yellow flags alongside the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

SLSQ’s focus on inclusivity and recognition of First Nations Custodianship signifies more than just the start of beach patrols.  The ceremony included a Welcome to Country by Traditional Custodians, underscoring the shared responsibility in safeguarding both lives and land.

SLSQ Chief Executive Officer said this year’s ‘Raising of the Flags’ was a powerful demonstration of our organisation’s commitment to our communities and First Nations recognition.

“The start of patrol season is always an important date on our calendar, marking the beginning of our volunteer patrols across the State,” said Whimpey.

“This year, we are proud to work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities, recognising their invaluable role in preserving the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of these lands on which we patrol.”

“This initiative underscores SLSQ’s commitment to First Nations inclusion and reinforces our dedication to building stronger relationships with the First Nations communities.”
