Surf Life Saving Queensland Cyclone Alfred Update

March 3, 2025

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred continues to track south off the Sunshine Coast of Queensland as a category 1 system, beaches across South East Queensland are closed, and Surf Life Saving Queensland urges everyone to stay out of the water.

Greg Cahill, SLSQ Chief Operations Officer said beaches from Rainbow Beach on the Sunshine Coast down to the southern beaches on the Gold Coast are now closed and reminded all beachgoers that now was not the time to go for a beach walk, swim or surf.

“Over the weekend we had 66 rescues, which is 66 rescues too many especially when the beaches are closed. We had swimmers but also surfers and craft riders that were taking far too adventurous decisions to go out in surf that is way too big and too extreme for their abilities.

We’re calling on all Queenslanders to stay out of the water. Please don’t put at risk our lifesavers and emergency services personnel because you want to venture out in these conditions,” he said.

“Based on the Bureau of Meteorology advice that they are expecting Cyclone Alfred to intensify to a category 2 tonight and maintain that intensity as it approaches the south-east late on Thursday, we expect the beaches to be closed for the whole week if not longer. It is really severe powerful surf conditions and we are seeing examples of beach erosion so now is not the time to go to the beach. When it’s time and safe again we will let you know.”
