Far North Queensland Clontarf Employment Forum

May 20, 2025

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) was proud to be part of the 2025 FNQ Clontarf Employment Forum in Cairns — an event that brought together over 100 senior Clontarf students from across eight academies, including Bentley Park College, Cairns SHS, Gordonvale SHS, Trinity Bay SHS, Western Cape College, Woree College and Yarrabah State School

Held at Brothers Leagues Club Cairns, the forum offered a dynamic platform for students to engage directly with industry representatives. SLSQ’s exhibit, led by professional Lifeguard Nathan and volunteer Rachael, stood out as a highlight for many students. Together, they shared insights into the diverse opportunities within Surf Life Saving, spanning volunteer roles, qualifications, and pathways into paid employment.

Students were introduced to key skills such as First Aid and CPR, gained an understanding of drone operations in beach safety, and learned about SLSQ’s unique combination of community service, sport, and career development. Some participants were already familiar with surf lifesaving, having completed their Bronze Medallion, taken part in recent Come and Try days, or competed in the Fastest on Sand event — all showcasing the impact of SLSQ’s engagement in North Queensland and the strong partnership with the Clontarf Foundation.

Importantly, students were able to express their interest in joining a club, gaining their bronze medallion and employment options with several completing expression of interest forms at the SLSQ table. The event encouraged one-on-one conversations between students and representatives, building confidence, career curiosity, and a greater understanding of pathways available after school.

SLSQ’s continued involvement in initiatives like the Clontarf Employment Forum strengthens partnerships with First Nations communities and supports the organisation’s goal to foster inclusive growth — not only within the surf lifesaving movement, but across Queensland’s broader communities.

By educating, inspiring, and building genuine connections with young people, events like this help shape a safer, more inclusive future — where the red and yellow proudly symbolises safety, opportunity, and a true sense of belonging.
