About the Role:
The Risk Officer will provide a full range of services and support across Workplace Health & Safety and Risk Management. The Risk Officer will be responsible for the maintenance and overview of the Surf Life Saving Queensland Risk & Safety Management Systems ensuring compliance with current legislative and regulatory obligations.
This role will be responsible for the maintenance and overview of the SLSQ Risk & Safety Management Systems, will manage and enhance risk management strategy and policies and deliver overall efficiency and effectiveness towards best practice initiatives to support a positive safety, risk and compliance culture.
This role is designed to identify and mitigate risks, ensure safe work systems and effect continuous improvement within SLSQ. Based in our South Brisbane office.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:
Workplace, Health, & Safety
- Develop, implement and review WHS policies and procedures.
- Lead and support continuous improvement projects that align with corporate safety strategy and promote a safety culture.
- Manage safety management systems including manuals, practices and reporting.
- Develop and implement a formal workplace health and wellbeing program.
- Work with key stakeholders to ensure injury management, WorkCover and return to work programs are managed effectively
- Be the primary source of expertise within SLSQ on matters relating to WHS.
- Assist with ensuring that WHS goals and objectives are understood, widely communicated, monitored and measured.
- Raise awareness and priority of WHS issues, providing advice, guidance and support to groups and individuals.
- Attend meetings and collaborate with Risk Committees.
- Keep up to date with legislative changes and ensure policies and processes are updated accordingly.
Risk
- Facilitate delivery of the risk and compliance functions, including implementation of processes, procedures and systems.
- Identify, assess and report on risk and compliance.
- Review policies, procedures and risk assessments to ensure compliance with legislation and industry best practice.
- Provide advice to SLSQ Executive Team and senior leaders on the implementation and management of SLSQ’s Risk Management Strategy and Risk Management Framework.
- Monitor and maintain an overview of SLSQ’s risk register and work with department managers to identify and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies in accordance with SLSQ’s risk appetite.
- Facilitate the promotion of a strong culture of risk management and compliance awareness.
- Administer and utilise (or develop where required) appropriate WHS and risk management tools.
- Maintain current knowledge in relevant fields and keep up-to-date with developments in legislation, technical and other guidance material relating to risk management.
- Assist with conducting risk assessments for special events and activities in accordance with relevant legislative and compliance requirements.
Skills, Qualifications, & Experience:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Risk Management and/or Workplace Health & Safety or related field.
- Proven experience in a similar role.
- Strong understanding of risk management and WHS principles.
- Knowledge and understanding of WHS Legislation (Acts, Regulations and Codes of Practice).
- Knowledge and understanding of ISO 9001 : 2015 Quality standards : Risk Management and ISO 45000 : Occupational Health & Safety.
- Significant experience with conducting risk assessments.
- Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinators Certificate (or ability to gain one).
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Working With Children Blue Card.
- Open Driver’s License.
- Ability to work independently.
