The SLSA Age Managers course has been developed to assist you with your role. The program will allow you to develop a greater knowledge about how SLS operates, and provide you with the skills and knowledge to assist you in the successful coordination and delivery of Nippers. 

Course outcomes

By the end of the course and successful completion of the practical requirements, you will be able to:
 • understand the roles and responsibilities of the age manager and the age manager mentor
 • develop strategies to work with children, parents and guardians, coaches, officials and club administrators
• manage risks in the beach environment
• cater for the physical, emotional and social development of Nippers in your care
• safely deliver lesson plans 
• emphasise fun and participation through educational games and engaging activities
• utilise a range of communication, teaching and behaviour management strategies to help Nippers learn basic skills. 

SLSA award entry requirements To become a qualified SLS age manager, you must:

• be a minimum of 15 years old 
• have completed the relevant state/territory legislation check(s) for working with children 
• have completed the online Child Safe Awareness Course
• be a financial member of a club.

Qualification Description


The PUA20119 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) is designed for introductory level participants in aquatic rescue activities. This will include rescuing, resuscitating and performing basic first aid in aquatic incidents that may involve oceans, rivers, swimming pools and vessels operating in coastal areas.

The role of an aquatic rescuer is to recognise and rescue a person experiencing difficulty in the water, to identify and use different types of rescue equipment and to communicate with community members and other agencies in the event of an aquatic emergency.

This may include undertaking basic patrol duties and developing surf awareness to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This qualification includes the units of competency required by aquatic rescuers to perform a range of activities such as responding to rescue incidents and conducting patrols. It typically involves working as a team member, under guidance, in aquatic rescue operations.

It is recommended for SLS members who wish to:
• perform in the role of a qualified lifesaver after the age of 15 years
• participate in SLS surf sports competitions which require them to be proficient in the Bronze Medallion as a prerequisite condition
• progress through the SLS Aquatic Rescue or Powercraft award pathway.

SURF LIFE SAVING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

To commence training for the Bronze Medallion you must:

• be a financial member of an SLS club
• be at least 15 years of age on the final assessment date
• complete an unaided swim of 400 m in 8 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 m, or over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to you undertaking any water training or assessment activities.

Evidence of this must be provided to the assessor prior to commencement of the assessment for this qualification/SLSA award.

You will also need an everyday standard of language, literacy and numeracy skills to be able to:

• follow written, verbal and visual instructions
• read and interpret a range of signs and symbols
• read and interpret written information
• make basic mathematical calculations to carry out everyday activities
• keep accurate written records

The PUA30322 Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue) is designed for participants performing aquatic search and rescue operations.

Aquatic search and rescue personnel can participate in the search and rescue for missing persons either in the water, or on nearby land. The role of an aquatic search and rescue team member is to prepare for search and rescue operations, recognise when a rescue response is required, perform complex patient rescues, including the search and rescue of a missing person, and demonstrate recovery and stand down processes.

This may include undertaking patrol duties and surf awareness to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.

This qualification includes the units of competency required by aquatic search and rescue personnel to perform a range of activities such as responding to search and rescue incidents and undertaking recovery operations. It typically involves working as a team member, under guidance, in aquatic search and rescue operations.

This qualification reflects the roles of flight crew personnel performing normal and emergency air crew officer duties in support of commercial or Defence aviation operations.

Air crew officer duties include applying technical and non-technical aviation skills and knowledge within rotary wing operational environments.

Individuals working at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, judgement and limited responsibility in known or changing contexts within established parameters.

This qualification forms some of the requirements for certification by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) as a task specialist or other aerial work operations as directed by Civil Aviation Safety Regulation (CASR) Part 138 Aerial work operations.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and to develop assessment tools used to guide the collection of quality evidence, including their application in formative, summative and recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment. It applies to experienced practitioners responsible for the development and/or delivery of training and assessment products and services. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Participants are required to hold intermediate digital literacy skills to complete the Online component of the course (computers and use of programs) are required. Learners are expected to have computer skills and knowledge of how to produce word-processed documents, use the Internet for research and upload videos using the Canvas Student App on their phones. At a minimum, the ability to use our user-friendly learning management system, CANVAS, to access all their learning resources and assessments.
A minimum of a Year 10 English skill is required. Participants are expected to have adequate written, comprehension and spoken communication abilities within familiar and some unfamiliar contexts to manage the reading, oral work and writing required in this course.

  • It is advisable but not compulsory for candidates to be wearing firm footwear when undertaking training and assessment in this induction, but it is likely that in most circumstances of operation, operators will not be using footwear due to the sandy conditions and this is acceptable under normal operations.

This course has been developed to educate Surf Life Saving Members on the safe operations of operating an All Terrain vehicle in the beach environment. All members that operate an ATV vehicle must obtain this award prior.

  • The licence must not be expired, suspended or cancelled.
  • The licence can be provisional or open – NOT LEARNER

COURSE OUTCOMES

  • Familiarisation with the SSV used at your location

The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) provides participants with basic patrolling and surf awareness knowledge, enabling participation in basic lifesaving patrol activities.
The award trains candidates in the skills of signals, radio operations, resuscitation, surf awareness, surf skill and rescue skills.

Candidates will also complete a 100m run - 100m swim - 100m run in 5 minutes or less on the day of the assessment.

Prerequisites Minimum 13 years old (on the day of the final assessment) Able to swim 200m in 5 minutes.
