SLSQ utilise UAVs with the SharkSmart Patrols at 10 locations around Queensland in Partnership with the Queensland Government. We also conduct safety flights for events and can assist with Search and Rescue Operations in Emergencies.
UAVs provide a birds-eye-view of a large area to enhance surveillance. With developments in technologies, the cameras on some of our UAVs have strong zoom functions and infrared capabilities that can help with Search and Rescue operations.
SLSQ aims to enhance drone capabilities in training and government programs, expand the volunteer club drone program, and improve the search and rescue operations to strengthen the emergency response division.
Our SharkSmart UAV Pilots have assisted in various emergencies. Helping direct assets to rescues, and monitoring potentially dangerous sharks, while our Lifesaving Services have evacuated the water.
The UAV Industry is rapidly developing with new innovations and SLSQ is working to integrate the new technologies to enhance safety for future beach goers.
When our Pilots are flying the UAVs they are required to focus on the safety of the flight. CASA requires that drones are flown more than 30m away from people. We need to respect the exclusion areas and not distract Pilots while they are flying. They will always be close to other Lifesaving personnel, so please direct your questions to our friendly Lifeguards and Lifesavers.
SLSQ is currently trialling a volunteer program at select Surf Life Saving Clubs in basic drone operations for basic Club operations. Specialised training is required, and drone operators must register with CASA and keep a logbook of all their flights.
Our Pilots require a CASA Remote Pilot’s Licence (RePL) and then complete additional training with SLSQ to adhere to our policies and procedures. SLSQ Pilots are trained by our own (CASA Approved Training Academy): Uncrewed Aviation Australia.
