Bribie Island SLSC
The Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club continues a long patrolling history at Woorim Beach, which commenced in 1923 by the Metropolitan Swimming Club.
Woorim Beach is a part of a long stretch of beach on the eastern side (surf side) of Bribie Island. The club is home to a large and very successful Junior Activities section, with a membership of approximately 200. Children from age 7-13 years enjoy this arena developing confidence in the surf, learning surf safety skills and having the opportunity to compete in the surf sports arena.
The Senior Surf Life Saving Club has a patrolling membership of approximately 220, that patrol the beach yearly from September to May. The Club is committed to the continuing success of both the licensed and active club, working autonomously in achieving our catchphrase: “Getting better all the time!”
Woorim Beach
The vast, unspoiled ocean-side swimming beach on Bribie Island – Queensland’s only offshore island connected to the mainland by a bridge.
Moreton Island lies 15km due east of Woorim, with the waters in between forming the wide, shoal dominated entrance to Moreton Bay. Moreton Island protects Bribie Island from most southerly swell, resulting in waves averaging 0.5 to 1m along Woorim Beach. These usually produce a narrow high tide beach with a continuous attached bar exposed at low tide. Rip channels are usually absent at Woorim and only form during and following waves greater than 1m. However southerly winds can produce a strong current running to the north.
Relatively safe, particularly under normal low waves, swimmers should be careful when waves exceed 1m as they can produce a heavy shore break, rips and a drag along the beach. South of Skirmish Point and along Bongaree Beach the waves are usually low, however tidal currents become an increasing hazard.
