Southport SLSC
The Southport SLSC was established in 1924, with its life savers patrolling Southport Main Beach on the northern end of the Gold Coast ever since.
Since 1924, the club’s membership has grown from 20 to more than 6000, the club has become a world champion in competition, kept its beach fatality free within the patrolled area and stayed a great member of the community.
Southport was one of the first clubs in Queensland to establish a junior activities section and there are currently over 250 Nippers who participate in regular training sessions and competition each Sunday throughout summer. Our senior club currently boasts over 200 patrolling volunteers who hold the proud record of “no lives lost between the flags” while on patrol.
The club’s restaurant and bar offer some of the best views and facilities on the Gold Coast – members and guests are always welcome!
Southport Beach
This is one of Queensland’s most heavily developed and utilised beaches. It offers a huge range of accommodation, attractions and facilities, but the water can be hazardous, so be careful when and where you swim.
Immediately south of Narrow Neck is the 2km long Southport Main Beach section. The Southport Surf Life Saving Club, Nippers Club and a dressing shed lie just off the beginning of The Esplanade. They are fronted by a large car park, a fenced foredune reserve and the beach. The beach, like the entire system, has a rip dominated inner bar and outer bar.
The eight surf lifesaving clubs and 16 lifeguard towers attest to the potential hazards along this string of beaches. Rips are present whenever waves are breaking and deep rip channels may run out from the shoreline. Swimmers should enter only in patrolled areas and avoid the rip holes and outer trough. Stay close inshore and on the attached portion of the bar.
