Cairns Surf Life Saving Club

Cairns Surf Life Saving Club is one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in Queensland, having been formed in 1924 as a volunteer organisation to patrol the northern beaches of Cairns.

Originally patrolling the Cairns Esplanade, the club moved to Yorkey’s Knob before moving to the Northern end of Palm Cove in 1953. It is one of only three clubs in Queensland that has freehold ownership of its land. Cairns SLSC maintains its voluntary patrols of the beach on weekends and public holidays from April to November.

The club offers activities for junior members aged between 5 and 13 (known universally as “Nippers”), and for senior members through to a thriving “Masters” (over 30) contingent. Competitively, the Cairns SLSC has been riding a wave of success in the last few years, and are currently the Branch and North Australian Champion club.

We encourage membership across the ages and offer a strong junior and senior program which appeals to all comers, to ensure that the Lifesaving presence of the Cairns Club continues strongly into the future. Cairns SLSC is currently undertaking a major rebuilding of its clubhouse and member facilities.

Palm Cove

Palm Cove is the northernmost beach in a trilogy of Cairns beaches including Trinity Beach, Kewarra Beach and Clifton Beach. With a sprinkling of islands on the horizon and a romantic jetty, Palm Cove is an idyllic Queensland beach.

The beach is arguably the cleanest of all Cairns’ beaches and offers picnic tables and free barbeques shaded by melaleuca trees along its length. At the northern end of the beach is a long jetty, with an area of beach reserved for dog walking.

During the warmer months (November to May) it is important to swim inside the swimming enclosures as they are the best patrolled swimming zones at the beach. The swimming nets at Palm Cove are designed to prevent large box jellyfish and large segments of box jellyfish tentacles from entering the enclosure.

The Surf Life Saving members maintain a voluntary patrol on the weekends from April to November.
