The Mission Beach Surf Club is located at South Mission Beach.
Mission Beach SLSC is patrolled on Sundays and public holidays from April until November, including Easter. The Club operates a marine stinger resistant net during the jellyfish season.
The Club hold nipper sessions on Sunday followed by a BBQ. Come along meet some local members, the Club does offer access to the gym with membership at the Club.
Mission Beach is 10km long and faces essentially due east. Some coral reefs lie off the northern 3km of beach, while Dunk Island dominates the horizon off the southern part of the beach.
While the Mission Beach is more than 16km from the Bruce Highway this beautiful tropical beach has long been popular for swimming and surfing.
Most of the beach is backed by a foreshore reserve that provides good access and shade under the trees. The beach is somewhat sheltered by Dunk Island and reefs, which results in low waves usually less than 0.5m. These interact with the generally fine to medium sand to produce a 50m wide high tide beach, with a narrow surf and a 100m wide, flatter low tide beach, and wider surf zone. Rips are usually weak or absent, however strong south-easterlies produce a northerly current along the beach. A strong northerly current also runs along the beach on outgoing spring tides.
This is a popular but rarely crowded beach, owing to its length. It is best to swim at the lifeguard-controlled stinger enclosure at South Mission Beach.
The Surf Life Saving members maintain a voluntary patrol on the weekends from April to November.
