Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club
In early 1980, the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club was established by a small group of volunteers. The Club was allocated a small block of State Government land on the foreshore of Four Mile Beach, Port Douglas to start a Surf Life Saving Club.
Fundraising by the local community allowed the construction of a small building to house the rescue equipment and a place to conduct training for members.
The membership in those early years was 6 adult males only. At the present time, we have 14 male & 18 female qualified lifesavers who conduct regular patrols on the beach. In 1990 a rapid change took place with the commencement of nippers, which is for ages 5 and up.
Four Mile Beach
With golden sand stretching as far as the eye can see and crystal clear water lapping gently against the shore, it is easy to lose track of time when walking on Four Mile Beach.
The beach unfolds in a gentle curve flanked by palm trees just a short walk from Port Douglas’s main street. But all that is expected – after all, Port Douglas is a tropical paradise. Four Mile Beach is a local’s escape from the daily grind and many walk the shoreline as the sun rises and sets.
For tourists, it is a pleasure to spend days swimming, sunbathing, dozing under the palms, enjoying a magical sunset, or joining locals for an invigorating walk.
The Surf Life Saving club members patrol the beach and during the warmer months when marine stingers may be present the stinger resistant enclosure is put in the water for swimmers.
