This course is designed for introductory level participants in aquatic rescue activities. This includes rescuing, resuscitating and performing basic first aid in aquatic incidents that may involve oceans, rivers, swimming pools and vessels operating in coastal areas.

Introduction:

PUA20119 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) course provides participants with the skills and knowledge of basic surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. The course covers all aspects of Lifesaving including rescues‚ the provision of first aid‚ spinal management‚ radio communication and beach management. 

Target Audience:

Course candidates should be a minimum 14 years old to commence training. This course is suitable for anyone seeking a role of an aquatic rescuer; however, course candidates should be a minimum 15 years old at date of final assessment.

The role of an aquatic rescuer is to recognise and rescue a person experiencing difficulty in the water, to identify and use different types of rescue equipment and to communicate with community members and other agencies in the event of an aquatic emergency. This may include undertaking basic patrol duties and developing surf awareness to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. Therefore, as part of entry requirements candidates are expected to be able to swim 400m in 9 minutes or less (goggles and mask permitted) ‚ in a swimming pool of at least 25m in length or over a measured open-water course. As long as you are continuously swimming‚ you can choose your own swim stroke.
