Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for people from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We believe diversity strengthens our community, and we are dedicated to promoting equity, respect, and a sense of belonging for all.
SLSQ has long engaged multicultural communities through club initiatives and volunteer-led programs. However, we recognise the opportunity to further break down barriers and enhance participation in surf lifesaving. With Queensland’s rich cultural diversity, SLSQ is committed to working alongside clubs and communities to improve access, ensure inclusivity, and provide vital beach safety education to all.
We are dedicated to advancing this journey through our Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CALD) Inclusion Action Plan. Our goal is to remove barriers for individuals from CALD backgrounds, promote a culture of safety and belonging, and expand initiatives that enhance accessibility and inclusion at the local level.
SLSQ is proud to partner with Multicultural Australia (MA), a leading non-profit organisation that supports new Queenslanders and promotes a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive society. This partnership is a key step in implementing SLSQ’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategy and ensuring our services are accessible to all.
Key Focus Areas:
Implementing SLSQ’s DEI Strategy – Working with MA to break down barriers, increase representation, and create a culture of inclusivity within surf lifesaving.
Action Plan for CALD Communities – Developing a roadmap to ensure people from all backgrounds can engage with and contribute to surf lifesaving.
Community Engagement & Education – Creating pathways for CALD communities to participate in lifesaving training, volunteering, and leadership roles.
Cultural Sensitivity & Support – Ensuring SLSQ programs and events are inclusive and welcoming through tailored initiatives and ongoing guidance.
The partnership between Queensland Academies and Mermaid Beach AEME Surf Life Saving Club provides students with invaluable hands-on experience in surf life-saving while actively contributing to the safety of Queensland’s coastline. Through this collaboration, students develop essential lifesaving skills, gain real-world leadership experience, and engage in meaningful community service.
By working alongside experienced surf lifesavers, students not only enhance their water safety knowledge but also build confidence, teamwork, and resilience—qualities that extend far beyond the beach. This initiative not only supports the club’s vital rescue efforts but also nurtures the next generation of community leaders and lifesavers.
Together, Queensland Academies and Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC are shaping a safer, more inclusive future, where young people are empowered to make a real difference in their communities.
