CALD Communities

Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for people from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds. We believe diversity strengthens our community, and we are dedicated to promoting equity, respect, and a sense of belonging for all.

While Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) has long supported the participation of multicultural communities through club initiatives and volunteer-led programs, we recognise the need to further enhance our role in delivering community-focused messaging around beach and water safety. Our goal is to reduce drowning incidents and improve safety outcomes across all communities. Given Queensland’s rich cultural diversity, SLSQ remains committed to working collaboratively with clubs and communities to improve access, promote inclusivity, and provide essential beach safety education for everyone.

How will we do this?

We are dedicated to advancing this journey through our CALD Communities Action Plan. Our goal is to remove barriers, promote a culture of safety and belonging, and expand initiatives that enhance accessibility and inclusion at the local level.

Partnership with Multicultural Australia

SLSQ is proud to partner with Multicultural Australia (MA), a leading non-profit organisation that supports new Queenslanders and promotes a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive society. This partnership is a key step in implementing SLSQ’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategy and ensuring our services are accessible to all.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Implementing SLSQ’s DEI Strategy – Working with MA to break down barriers, increase representation, and create a culture of inclusivity within surf lifesaving.

  • Action Plan for CALD Communities – Developing a roadmap to ensure people from all backgrounds can engage with and contribute to surf lifesaving.

  • Community Engagement & Education – Creating pathways for CALD communities to participate in lifesaving training, volunteering, and leadership roles.

  • Cultural Sensitivity & Support – Ensuring SLSQ programs and events are inclusive and welcoming through tailored initiatives and ongoing guidance.
