What Kind of Training Is Involved in Surf Life Saving?

If you’re thinking about joining a surf club or becoming a volunteer with Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ), you might be wondering: What kind of training is involved?

Good news — whether you want to patrol the beach, support youth programs, help at events, or stay behind the scenes, SLSQ offers training for all levels, ages, and abilities.

Let’s break it down.

Training for Patrolling Lifesavers

If your goal is to become a qualified surf lifesaver on patrol, you’ll need to complete the Bronze Medallion. This is the nationally recognised qualification that prepares you for beach patrols and rescue situations.

Bronze Medallion training includes:

  • Surf awareness and rescue techniques
  • First aid and CPR
  • Spinal management
  • Radio communications and signals
  • Teamwork and emergency response
  • A 400m swim in under 9 minutes

Training is delivered over several weeks at your local surf club, with a mix of theory and practical sessions.

Other Qualifications You Can Earn

Don’t want to patrol the beach? No problem. SLSQ provides other training options for volunteer roles like:

  • Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC): Great for 13–14 year olds or new members wanting basic surf skills
  • Provide First Aid: Learn how to manage emergencies on land and treat injuries
  • CPR Training: A fast, practical course that could help you save a life
  • Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART): For those supporting major events or rescue teams
  • Radio Operator Training: Learn how to communicate with patrols from the tower
  • Age Manager Training: For volunteers supporting the Nippers program
  • Trainer & Assessor Courses: For experienced members wanting to teach others

All training is delivered by qualified SLSQ educators, and many qualifications are nationally recognised.

Is the Training Hard?

Not at all — and you’re never expected to know everything from day one.

SLSQ trainers are supportive, experienced, and ready to help you succeed. You’ll be part of a team learning together, with plenty of hands-on experience and real-life scenarios to build your confidence.

Can Anyone Access the Training?

Yes! Training is open to all volunteers once they join a club. It’s included as part of your membership, and flexible course times are available across Queensland.

No matter your background or ability, there’s a learning pathway for you.

Why Training Matters

SLSQ training isn’t just about ticking boxes — it’s about giving you the skills and confidence to respond when it counts. Whether you’re in the surf, on patrol, or helping behind the scenes, you’ll walk away prepared, capable, and proud.

Ready to Learn Something New?

Because with the right training, anyone can be a lifesaver. Including you.
