Volunteering at Every Age: Opportunities for Everyone at Surf Life Saving Queensland

When it comes to making a difference, age is no barrier. At Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ), we believe that everyone — from teens to retirees — has something valuable to contribute.

Whether you’re looking to build skills, meet new people, support your community, or just try something new, there’s a volunteer opportunity for every age and stage of life.

Volunteering for Teens (13–17 Years Old)

If you’re a teenager who wants to stay active, gain real-world skills, and be part of something bigger, surf lifesaving is an exciting place to start.

Opportunities include:

  • Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) – Your first step toward becoming a patrolling lifesaver (age 13+)
  • Nipper Age Assistant – Help mentor younger children in the junior program
  • Water Safety Support – Assist during training and club events
  • Youth Advisory Roles – Get involved in shaping the future of lifesaving for your generation

It’s also a great way to complete school community service hours and build your confidence and leadership skills.

Volunteering for Young Adults (18–30 Years Old)

Whether you’re at uni, working, or figuring out what’s next, SLSQ offers flexible volunteer roles that fit your lifestyle and help you grow personally and professionally.

Popular options:

  • Bronze Medallion Training – Become a qualified lifesaver
  • Patrol Team Member – Help protect beachgoers on weekends and holidays
  • First Aid and CPR Training – Gain nationally recognised qualifications
  • Social Media and Club Marketing – Put your digital skills to work for your local surf club

You’ll join a network of like-minded people who value community, purpose, and teamwork.

Volunteering for Parents and Families

Looking for a way to get involved with your kids or give back while they’re in Nippers?

Volunteer roles for parents include:

  • Age Manager / Nipper Support – Lead or assist with junior surf sessions
  • Event Volunteer – Help out at carnivals, BBQs, or community open days
  • Club Admin and Support – Assist with rostering, member records, or general operations
  • First Aid Officer – Provide support during club activities (training provided)

Volunteering as a family is a powerful way to bond and role model community values.

Volunteering for Adults (30–60 Years Old)

Many people in this age range are balancing work, kids, and other commitments — which is why SLSQ offers flexible roles to suit your schedule.

Options include:

  • Patrolling on a casual or rostered basis
  • Committee or leadership roles within your club
  • Community education or water safety presentations
  • Fundraising and sponsorship support
  • Operational support or gear maintenance

Use your life experience and professional skills to make a lasting impact in your community.

Volunteering for Retirees and Seniors

Just because you’re no longer working doesn’t mean you’re done contributing. Many retirees find surf lifesaving to be the perfect place to stay active, social, and connected to purpose.

Great roles for retirees include:

  • Radio Operator – Assist with communications from the tower (no water work)
  • First Aid Support – Help during patrols and events
  • Clubhouse Admin – Support member services or induction
  • Mentoring and Inclusion – Share your wisdom and support newer volunteers
  • Welfare and Support Roles – Help create a welcoming, inclusive environment for all ages

You don’t need to be in the surf to make a splash.
