Can I Be a Lifesaver If I Can’t Swim? Absolutely. Here’s How.

When most people think of surf lifesaving, they picture strong swimmers diving into the waves to perform rescues. So it’s natural to ask: Can I volunteer as a lifesaver if I can’t swim?

The answer is yes — and not just a polite yes. A real, meaningful yes.
At Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ), being a lifesaver is about more than just swimming. It’s about community, safety, teamwork, and contributing in a way that suits your strengths.

You don’t need to be in the surf to help save lives.

Lifesaving Takes a Whole Team — Not Just Swimmers

While patrolling lifesavers do need to earn their Bronze Medallion (which includes a 400m swim), there are many other volunteer roles at your local surf club that don’t require swimming at all.

Whether you’re great with people, skilled in organisation, or simply passionate about giving back, there’s a way for you to get involved.

Non-Swimming Volunteer Roles at Surf Clubs

Here are just some of the volunteer opportunities available if you’re not confident in the water:

  • Radio Operator – Coordinate patrols and rescues from the tower using radios and communications equipment.
  • First Aid Officer – Provide land-based medical support during patrols or events (SLSQ provides training).
  • Club Administration – Help with paperwork, member records, rostering, and behind-the-scenes operations.
  • Fundraising & Events – Organise BBQs, raffles, community days, and surf carnivals.
  • Youth Support / Age Manager – Guide young members (Nippers) and help run on-beach activities.
  • Inclusion & Welfare Support – Help foster a safe, welcoming space for members of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Gear & Equipment Coordinator – Maintain rescue boards, first aid kits, and beach safety equipment.
  • Social Media & Communications – Capture club life, manage social channels, and share stories with the community.
  • Education & Water Safety Support – Assist during training sessions, community programs, or school visits.

You don’t need to be in the surf to be part of the mission. Every role supports the goal of keeping Queenslanders safe.

Training and Support Is Always Provided

SLSQ offers training and mentorship for all volunteer roles, including those off the beach. You’ll never be thrown in the deep end (literally or figuratively). Whether you want to earn a qualification in first aid, learn radio operations, or support club programs, you’ll be guided every step of the way.

You Belong Here — Whether You Swim or Not

If you’ve been holding back because you can’t swim, let this be your sign: there’s a place for you at your local surf club. Volunteering with SLSQ is flexible, inclusive, and open to everyone who wants to help.

And who knows? Many members who start off helping behind the scenes eventually decide to build their water confidence and go on to earn their Bronze Medallion — but only if and when they’re ready.
