Surf Life Saving Queensland is calling on the public to help raise vital funds ahead of a busy summer across Queensland’s coastline.
The Queensland Lifesavers Appeal is a month-long campaign designed to help support the State’s 58 Surf Life Saving Clubs.
The goal is to raise $500,000 with proceeds from the Appeal to directly fund vital lifesaving training and equipment, as well as various coastal safety initiatives.
While surf lifesavers volunteer their time, the cost of one beach patrol can be more than $80,000 worth of essential lifesaving equipment.
Surf Life Saving Queensland Chief Executive Officer Dave Whimpey said Queenslanders can show their appreciation for volunteers surf lifesavers by making a donation, which at the end of the day, will also help keep their families safe this summer.
“We often take swimming at the beach safely for granted, but unfortunately it does come with a price,” he said.
“Last year more than 3,200 lives were saved on Queensland beaches because our surf lifesavers donate their time and risked their lives to make sure loved ones were returned safely to their families.
“Now our men and women who wear the red and yellow need your help to continue keeping Queensland beaches safe.
“Equipment used in rescues every day costs from $100 for a new rescue tube, $4,000 for a fully-stocked First Aid Kit to $13,000 for a new inflatable rescue boat.
“I’m asking all Queenslanders, what would you give to save a life?”
