Membership Protection Information Officer

A Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) provides information and guidance on rights, responsibilities and options available within the complaint resolution procedures. An MPIO is the first point of contact in a club for any enquiries, concerns or complaints around harassment, child abuse and other inappropriate behaviour. The MPIO provides information to the person with the concern. An MPIO is impartial and will not investigate or mediate complaints. Their role is to provide information to members who need it.

The Role of Member Protection Information Officer

  • Helping members by providing information relating to options available when resolving concerns including child protection, harassment, bullying, welfare and conduct matters.
  • Help members make informed decisions, providing guidance on complaint procedures.
  • Responsible for providing information about a person’s right, responsibilities and options to make a complaint or raise a concern. Under 6.06 SLSA  Complaints Resolution Policy
  • Has extensive knowledge on all other club, state and national surf lifesaving policies and procedures.
  • Understanding their role is to not handle the complaint, nor provide emotional support, but rather guide members to the various policy instruments applicable.
  • Help SLSQ clubs with necessary resources, tools and education to resolve issues at an early stage.
  • Maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the Member Protection Policy and the Complaint Resolution Policy/Procedure.

 

Training

Training is to be completed through Sports Integrity Australia, it’s a free course in Queensland. This training has two components, first there cover online modules and the second part is a face-to-face workshop (can be virtual if required).

Once the 7 modules have been completed  online you will need to email the Member Welfare Officer mcaughlan@lifesaving.com.au with the Certificate of Completion. A face-to-face workshop will then be organised for you to attend.

After you have completed the training, you will be given  an award on Surfguard – SLSQ MPIO. The Surfguard Award will hold an expiry of 2 years.

Information packages will be sent upon completion of the above requirements. This information will have tips and guides on how to be a Member Protection Information Officer.

 

Applying for the Role

The above training is mandatory however, further knowledge on SLSQ’s policies and procedures is required. The main policy instruments to consider are the Member Protection Policy SLSA (MPP), the Complaints Resolution Policy and the Child Safe Policy, all available on the SLSQ App under SLSA Policies. We also have the constitution and by-laws and SLSQ Code of Conduct. SLSQ’s aim is to have one MPIO per club throughout Queensland.
