WHY ATTEND?

The conference aims to provide SLSQ members with relevant and beneficial information, latest initiatives and ideas across a variety of topics in preparation for the upcoming patrol season.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The conference is open to all Surf Life Saving members within Queensland. We strongly recommend clubs and branches to encourage and support those in leadership and committee roles within the organisation to attend.

Membership Development: Building Lifesaving Leaders

Location: Auditorium

Description: Our members are our most valuable resource. While surf lifesaving provides training for our frontline lifesavers through our education awards, we are now extending our development opportunities to provide skills and knowledge for members in all leadership roles. At this session we will provide an overview of the current development programs on offer within SLSQ, member pathways and we will also launch the new online learning packages available for members who are leading our clubs throughout the state.

Kirsten Phillips

Kirsten Phillips is a Membership Services Committee Member.

Simon Steinhofer 

Simon is a Principal Civil Engineer, working in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. In is role he as the Civil Lead for the Brisbane office he manages a team 15 engineers and designers in the delivery of infrastructure and urban development projects. Simon started his surf lifesaving career at Sarina Beach SLSC in 1999, then spent time at Emu Park SLSC, Ellis Beach SLSC, Cairns SLSC and is now is a member at Dicky Beach SLSC. Simon has been a member of a number of surf lifesaving committees ranging from Club, Branch and State and is currently part of the QLD Membership Services Committee. Simon has had the privilege of being a judge for the National Volunteer of the year and QLD Life Saver of the Year awards. Simon attended the National Leadership program as a participant in 2012, and as a facilitator in 2014,2015, 2019 & 2020. Simon has held leadership positions with Engineers Australia in included the role of Chair/ President for the Sunshine Coast and Cairns Regional Groups for a number of years.

Club Development: Providing the tools to better manage your club

Location: Room 2

Description: Surf clubs are complex with unique requirements and challenges, this session will provide an overview of the resources and support tools that are available to help you better manage governance and leadership within your club. This session will cover everything from resources to support your key club leadership positions through to understanding and optimising your membership statistics.

Robert Campbell

Rob Campbell: Rob Campbell is the State Membership Services Officer (MSO) and has been involved in Surf Life Saving for 22 years. He is a member of Dicky Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and has been actively involved in Membership and Development at Club, Branch, State and National levels for over 15 years. Rob was at the forefront of development and implementation of the organisations Child and Risk Management Strategy (CRYMS) and has overseen the strategic development of the State and Sunshine Coast development programs, development of the organisations Member Recognition system and Member Protection systems. Rob chairs the Membership Services Committee (MSC), that has been at the forefront of implementation of organisational Statistics reporting, the Familiy Participation Program, SLSQ Member App, Patrol Gap Calculator, Learning Management System (LMS) and various Junior Activities programs and operational risk management strategies. The MSC is currently working on the delivery of the SLSQ Board supported Sustainability Projects – Club Development and Member Development.

Michael Kearney

Michael joined North Kirra SLSC in 2002 and since this time has undertaken roles at all levels of the organisation. Michael has been an active patrolling member and has held Club roles including Club Captain, Chief Training Officer as well as Surf and Supporters Club Treasurer and President. Michael was the Point Danger Branch Director of Lifesaving, a member of the Branch Council and has held roles on the SLSQ Lifesaving Services Committee, Education Panel and Patrol Services Panel. • For his service to North Kirra SLSC Michael was awarded Life Membership in 2021. Michael is an experienced finance professional, managing and growing a large and complex debt portfolio. Michael has worked in both Australia and the UK for banks as well as a Fund Manager. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science (Property Economics) and a Graduate Certificate of Applied Finance.

Junior Activities: Initiatives that will help you run a ripper nipper program

Description: With almost 12,000 nippers taking to our beaches each season, keeping our junior activities programs fresh, exciting and running efficiently means we need to continue to adapt what we do. We want all participants in our junior activities programs to be saying ‘it’s a ripper to be a nipper’. This session will cover new initiatives and success stories in junior activities.

Youth Development: Active, enthusiastic and engaged young lifesavers

Location: Room 2

Description: Young lifesavers are a critical part of the organisation making up the majority of our patrolling members. At a club level, active, enthusiastic and engaged young lifesavers will make for a healthier and more sustainable club. This session will look at our current status with youth recruitment and retention (14-30 years), opportunities for youth development, and what makes a great youth program at club level.
