NVW: Jason Wells
Having two young children was what brought Jason Wells, or “Wellsey” as he is affectionately known as, back to lifesaving after 22 years. At 13 years old, Wells moved up to Townsville from Brisbane with his family and patrolled the beaches on his weekends on Magnetic Island. He would eventually go on to leave at the age of 15 to dedicate more time to playing water polo.
“I came back with my kids when my son was in the under 8s,” Wells told Surf Life Saving Queensland.
“I ended up doing my bronze medallion again in my late 30s.”
Now, twelve years later, after gaining his Bronze Medallion for a second time, Wells is the Junior Activities Co-Ordinator at Townsville Picnic Bay SLSC and Director of Surf Sports for the North Barrier Branch.
“Surf Life Saving is very family-oriented,” he said.
“My daughter and I both started patrolling at the same age and I had the opportunity to join her on her first day patrolling on Magnetic Island.
“I also don’t think there’s too many sports where you can compete on the same beach as your children.
Wells has always enjoyed the competitive sport aspect of surf life saving and still competes in events but believes the best aspect of the movement is that there is something for everyone.
“I think it’s great for young kids to get involved in as it’s not just sport,” he said.
“My daughter is not that competitive at all but took on rescue and resuscitation and she’s won Queensland medals and an Australian bronze medal.”
The opportunity to make lifelong friends with people across all areas of the state is something he cherishes.
“One of the most enjoyable aspects to me is the camaraderie between members and the many new new friends I have
made at States and Aussies,” he said.
“For me one of my most events is the Queensland Inter-branch Championships.
“I have been involved with the QLD Country Team for five years and Team Manager the last two.
“This team brings kids together from clubs staring at the very top, Port Douglas, all the way down to Hervey Bay in the South.
“It’s great to see these kids come together as a team.”
