Cameron Rogers protecting lives in and out of the water

Many of those who keep our beaches safe as surf lifesavers also defend our country as members of the Australian Defence Force.

Cameron Rogers who patrols Mudjimba Beach on his weekends is a Leading Aircraftsman for the RAAF Base Amberley.

2020 will mark his seventh year in the Defence Force and second as a member of Surf Life Saving Queensland.

“They’re both great atmospheres,” Rogers told Surf Life Saving Queensland.

“Patrolling is similar to the military in terms of team work and camaraderie.

“You’re working hard to achieve a goal and that’s to protect people.”

Rogers joined the RAAF in 2013, with the job taking him across the country and all over the world.

“This is what I’ve always really wanted to do, ever since I was a kid I wanted to join the Air Force,” Rogers said.

“I have a passion for aviation.

“I was an aircraft technician for a good six years in Defence and completed my training at RAAF Base Wagga Wagga.

“The job took me all over the world including the Middle East, Asia Pacific Islands and America where my role was to support and maintain the aircraft which included changing the tyres, maintaining Hydraulic and pneumatic systems and identifying any faults.”

“I have even travelled to Antarctica where I delivered supplies to Australian scientists.

Rogers is now training on the C-27J Spartan as a Loadmaster aircrew who supervise cargo, passengers and assist with humanitarian aid, which includes distributing supplies and appropriate equipment to those who are vulnerable.

On Anzac Day he would traditionally march down Brisbane’s city streets proudly but will instead take part in RSL Queensland’s Light Up the Dawn initiative which asks people to stand in their driveway, balcony or living room and remember all those who have served and sacrificed.

“I hope many Queensland lifesavers will take the time on Saturday morning to commemorate the Anzacs,” Rogers said.

“It doesn’t matter how you do it, but as long as you still pay your respects to the fallen who sacrificed so much for our country.”

Surf Life Saving Queensland are encouraging members to wear their patrol uniform while participating in RSL Queensland’s Light Up the Dawn initiative at 6am this Saturday.
