Leadership Excellence Program

Leadership Excellence Program

It marked 27 years of SLSQ’s state leadership programs and is the pinnacle member development program for surf lifesavers aged 18 to 30.

The program aims to:

  • Develop inspired leaders with a heightened awareness of their surroundings and to provide key connections that engender a robust personal support network;
  • Create “agents of change” that allow the leaders to understand the importance of organisational sustainability and confidently take key leadership roles in the future and,
  • Enhance leadership skills and qualities in managing unpredictable, critical and emergency situations.

The 2018 UQ SLSQ Leadership Excellence Program saw 41 from Queensland’s 58 surf life saving clubs as well as members from New South Wales come together and participate in a wide range of professional and personal development sessions to prepare them for greater engagement and leadership in all facets of surf life saving disciplines.

During the program, participants heard from guest speakers Kerrie Barnes, Point Danger Branch Manager and Jim Keogh QLD Police Detective Superintendent (Retired). As well as inspiring Queensland business leaders, including Dr Dimity Dornan AO, Executive Director and Founder, Hear and Say; and Associate Professor Bernard McKenna, Management Discipline Leader, UQ Business School.

Participants were also able to network with key contacts within SLSQ, including Michael White, Deputy President, Des Kerr, Membership Services Manager, and Craig Williams, Acting CEO.
